Our Trailer Review:
Clark Kent aka Superman returns to our cinema screens in Zack Snyder’s new movie about the son of Jor El, Man of Steel.
We all know the story, a young boy from an alien planet is sent to Earth from the planet Krypton which is facing imminent destruction. He is then rescued and raised by a loving family. As the boy grows to manhood he will become Earth’s greatest champion. The story is one of the greatest comic book tales ever told and has a firm place in popular culture.
Man of Steel is an action adventure movie about the rise of earth’s protector and hero. Superman (played by Henry Cavill) is seen first as young boy and then later as a grown man. His parents Martha and Jonathan Kent (played by Diane Lane and Kevin Costner) try to protect the young Clark Kent from a world that may not understand him and may fear his abilities. Clark’s cover is eventually blown and he is forced to use his powers to save others for the first time. His father, Jonathan is not too happy about this and warns Clark about revealing his true potential. It’s clear Jonathan wants to protect his son but Clark cannot simply stand by when others are in peril. This dilemma looks like it will be a major theme in the movie. Is the world ready for a savior like Superman or will the world fear him? Clark Kent is seen as a grown man floating in a sea surrounded by debris, his pose is prostrate and he almost resembles a Christ-like figure. This image is an interesting symbol of Clark’s role on Earth.
As Clark tries to learn about his past he explores what appears to be an alien ship or perhaps the Fortress of Solitude. The fortress was a refuge sent to Earth from Krypton, a place where Clark could be at peace and also learn about his home planet. The place functions like a library, messages were recorded by Clark’s father Jor El (played by Russell Crowe) and made available for Clark to use there.
Eventually Clark is revealed in full costume from behind and the iconic cape is blowing in the wind. The yellow Superman insignia is absent from the cape itself. Superman then takes flight in true breathtaking fashion. Various scenes of action are shown as hostile alien Kryptonian ships arrive on earth. The ships appear at the Kent’s home which is a very bad omen for Clark’s family. General Zod then emerges and he is played by the well known character actor Michael Shannon. Zod was a wanted criminal on Krypton and his appearance on Earth means bad news. Scenes of chaos and destruction ensue as the Earth comes under attack from the alien forces. At this time Lawrence Fishburne also appears as Perry White, newspaper editor and Clark’s employer in the older movies and comics. Superman is also seen in handcuffs with a human soldier escort. It seems the world may not be ready for such a gifted individual. Amy Adams is also shown as Lois Lane.
Zack Snyder is a visionary director and Man of Steel looks like it will have a nice balance of action and drama. The film also has a cast of talented actors which bodes well. Hopefully Man of Steel will avoid the style over substance approach and deliver a compelling epic.
Man of Steel will be released on June 14th next year. Have a look at the trailer and give us your thoughts.
