Our Trailer Review:
Maverick director M. Knight Shyamalan returns to the Sci Fi genre with another high concept movie called After Earth starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. After Earth is a Sci Fi action adventure film with a rather intriguing storyline.
Cypher Raige (Will Smith) is a legendary General returning home via spaceship after an extended tour of duty. The twist is that home is no longer Earth. After Earth is set a thousand years into a future where mankind has abandoned our home planet for a new home called Nova Prime. Earth has been so badly plundered, polluted and abused that it is no longer habitable by the human race. Cypher is attempting to reconnect with his estranged 13 yr old son Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) who is also on the space ship. It is implied that Cypher neglected his family to pursue his military career. Unfortunately Cypher’s ship is damaged by an asteroid storm and the dynamic duo crash land on Earth. The planet has naturally changed a fair bit since the human race took to the stars and has become an extremely hostile place. The animals on earth have learned to survive without human domination and have evolved. They are also very dangerous and capable of killing humans without much trouble. The Earth itself also appears to be recovering after so many years free of human occupation. Cypher is injured in the crash and Kitai will have to trek into the hostile territory to recover the ships rescue beacon. If Kitai wanted to walk in his father’s footsteps now he has the chance.
After Earth looks like it will feature plenty of action and drama as our heroes try to survive their ordeal and find a way home. There are a few hints about what kind of surprises they will encounter on the now hostile Earth. Cypher and Kitai are assailed by a wide menagerie of hostile native animals and also appear to come under attack from enemy ships in a brief part of the trailer. There will no doubt be a fair bit of Father and son bonding too as they have to work together to survive.
M. Knight Shymalan has always made movies concerned with big ideas. Hopefully With After Earth he can also give us a fair bit of drama and character development too. Will Smith can deliver a good performance when he is given the right material. His son Jaden also shows promise too. We will have to wait and see how the pair will overcome their trials and tribulations when the film is released next year on June 7th.
