Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman joins the cast of The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire.
Taking the movie world by storm, the adaptaion of Suzanne Collins’s hugely successful The Hunger Games was an unexpected box-office smash-hit earlier this year. Effectively launching Jennifer Lawrence into the Hollywood A lister stratosphere (a world she was already on the outskirts of, having appearing in Winter’s Bone and X-Men: First Class), the film was lauded by critics and cinema-goers alike for presenting a very real representation of the world Collins created in her novel.
The first in a trilogy of stories (and a quadrilogy of movies), The Hunger Games is followed by sequel Catching Fire. Casting rumours have abounded since The Hunger Games initially landed in cinemas March 2012. Some have been downright refuted (including the rumoured inclusion of Robert Pattinson, star of the hugely successful, though highly criticised, Twilight saga) but the inclusion of Philip Seymour Hoffman on Catching Fire’s casting rosta seems to have been confirmed.
The actor, who has appeared in such films as The Boat That Rocked, Mission: Impossible III, Synecdoche, New York and Magnolia, is renowned for his acting ability. Setting tongues wagging, the news that he will appear in Catching Fire has affirmed people’s convictions that the sequel will continue the first part’s strong style, even though directoral duties will have shifted to Francis Lawrence after Gary Ross pulled out.
Hoffman will play influential character Plutarch Heavensbee, the new gamemaker in the barabric Hunger Games, joining the original cast which includes Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz. The film is set to be released 22 November 2013.
