In our latest trailer round-up we have everything from Morgan Freeman to Bruce Willis, romantic comedy to time travel, and Woody Allen to Emily Blunt (times two!) Films from Rob Reiner, Lynn Shelton, Oliver Stone, Rian Johnson and, of course, the great Woody Allen himself, all have a place on our list this week.
Your Sister’s Sister
Starring Emily Blunt, Rose Dewitt and Mark Duplass, Your Sister’s Sister is a comedy drama from Lynn Shelton, who has already directed several rom-coms and had a hand in the television shows Mad Men and New Girl. In Your Sister’s Sister, Iris (Blunt) invites her friend Jack (Duplass) to stay at her family’s isolated island home after the death of his brother. Once there, he meets, gets drunk and sleeps with Iris’ sister Hannah (Dewitt). Iris arrives soon after and matters are complicated further by the fact that Iris and Jack begin to realise that they have feelings for each other.
The Magic of Belle Isle
Morgan Freeman takes the lead in this charming comedy. Monte Wildhorn (Freeman) is a struggling writer who is confined to a wheelchair. He moves to a rural American town where he meets single mother Mrs O’Neil (Virginia Madsen) and her three daughters, who slowly help him reignite his passion for writing. The Magic of Belle Isle comes from the pen of Rob Reiner (also known for The Story of Us and This is Spinal Tap), and is full of witty one-liners delivered with characteristic brevity by the Oscar-winning Freeman.
Looper
It’s yet more confusing time travel shenanigans in Rian Johnson’s Looper, starring Joseph Gordon Levitt as mob hit man Joe, and Bruce Willis as… mob hit man Joe. That’s right. It’s 2042, and Younger Joe (Gordon Levitt) is a specialised assassin who takes out targets that are zapped back in time just so that he can shoot them (for ridiculous amounts of money). All is going well with his strange career choice until suddenly he finds himself pointing a gun at an older version of himself (Willis). Needless to say, all hell breaks loose; Older Joe manages to evade the clutches of Younger Joe, who is then faced with the moralistic space-time quandary of attempting to hunt down and kill himself. Emily Blunt also stars in this rip-roaring, if slightly confusing, action movie.
Savages
A strange-sounding film from director Oliver Stone, Savages stars Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson as two pot-growing drug dealers who share the same girlfriend (Blake Lively). When she is kidnapped by a Mexican cartel, they must fight the drug barons to try to get her back. Also starring John Travolta, Salma Hayek, Uma Thurman and Benicio del Toro, Savages will be a graphically violent film, full of drugs, sex, and probably some rock’n’roll too. Savages seems an odd choice for Stone, who is well known for directing more politically based films such as his Vietnam War trilogy (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven and Earth), George Bush biopic W. and World Trade Centre. Still, drug crime is nothing if not political, so perhaps he is the right person to head up this crime thriller after all.
To Rome with Love
To Rome with Love is the latest offering from director, writer, actor and comedian Woody Allen. The film will centre on the lives, loves and troubles of a group of people, some American and some Italian, who are thrown together in Rome. Along with Allen, the film will star Ellen Page, Jessie Eisenberg, Penelope Cruz and Alec Baldwin. This will be Allen’s first acting role in six years (he was last in his own film Scoop in 2006) and many fans are looking forward to seeing him back on the screen, heading up a great ensemble cast in this endearing comedy.
