Top 5 Celebrity Video Game Voiceovers

Video games are no longer the geeky pastimes of teenage boys in their bedrooms. With each passing year games are getting bigger and better bringing with them some unbelievable talent. While many mainstream actors tend to stick to the traditional film and TV, a few of them have taken the plunge into the video game world. Here are five of our favourite celebrity video game voiceovers.

5. Kristen Bell – Assassin’s Creed

Kristen Bell has become known in recent years for her portrayal as Princess Anna in Frozen. In case you’re not aware, Frozen is pretty popular so it’s no real surprise that Bell reprised her role in the Disney Infinity game series as well as the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 3. But shortly after her breakthrough title role in Veronica Mars came to end, Bell took on the role of Lucy Stillman in Assassin’s Creed. The seemingly unimportant Abstergo Industries assistant turns out to be more than she seems as we later discover when Bell reprises the role in Assassin’s Creed II and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.

4. Samuel L Jackson – GTA: San Andreas

Playing Nick Fury in several films from the Marvel universe, being a frequent collaborator with Quentin Tarantino, and starring in the likes of Pulp Fiction, Patriot Games, Snakes on a Plane, and the Star Wars prequel trilogy, there’s no denying that Samuel L. Jackson is one of the biggest actors on the planet. Jackson has had voice roles in a few video games in his time including those from Marvel and Disney, but most famously played corrupt police officer Frank Tenpenny in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. As the main antagonist in the story, Tenpenny has an influence over the Grove Street Families and abuses his power by forcing protagonist CJ to do his dirty work for him.

3. Peter Dinklage – Destiny

While exploring the world of Destiny, the guardians are accompanied by a little floating AI bot, known as Ghost. Since The Taken King expansion pack was released, the voice of this NPC character has been played by Nolan North, known for voicing Nathan Drake in Uncharted and Desmond Miles in Assassin’s Creed, but the original voice actor for this little robot was none other than Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage. The man behind Tyrion Lannister voiced Ghost when Destiny was first released, but due to scheduling issues, developers were forced to find a replacement for upcoming expansion packs. In order to create a consistent storytelling experience end to end, Nolan North re-recorded all of Ghost’s original lines from the base game. So, unless you played Destiny at the time of release it’s very likely that you missed Dinklage’s portrayal.

2. Charles Dance – The Witcher 3

Charles Dance is a big name in the acting world and was appointed OBE in 2006 for his contribution to his art. He is known for playing some high-profile roles over the years across film, stage, and of course TV where he famously portrayed Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. 2015 saw his very first video game voice acting role as Emperor Emhyr var Emreis in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Emhyr var Emreis is the very powerful and ruthless ruler of the Nilfgaardian empire, who plays a major role in Geralt’s search for Ciri in The Witcher 3’s main story.

1. Rami Malek – Until Dawn

Rami Malek has very quickly shot into superstardom since his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, which brought with it several best actor awards. While he has been appearing on our screens in various forms for over ten years now, it was his role in Mr Robot that many know him from. However, video game fans will more than likely recognise him from Supermassive Entertainment’s action-consequence horror game Until Dawn. Voicing and providing motion capture for one of eight playable characters, Malek plays the deeply troubled Josh whose delusions convince him to pose as a masked psychopath to scare his friends in retaliation for the disappearance of his sisters.
