The past weekend saw the race to become EU LCS Summer Split Champions, and to qualify for the World Championships later in the year, blown wide open as both G2 and the Unicorns of Love conceded unlikely defeats in week three.
Since their return from the Mid-Season Invitational in Brazil, G2 look like they might still be in holiday mode, having lost consecutive matches in Group A of the EU LCS Summer split. Having won their first two matches, G2 stumbled against a particularly strong looking Fnatic team who are seeking to recover their crown. They then came up against a resilient Misfits side who over three games looked far more comfortable than their counterparts, and have ended week three at the top of group A.
Fnatic, however, despite their fantastic recent run of form led by Rekkles and Broxah over the weekend, had a three game winning streak stopped abruptly by Roccat. Group A now looks wide open and this weekend (Thursday-Sunday) with teams playing matches across groups G2’s hold over the EU LCS could look like crumbling if they do not beat the Unicorns of Love. If Roccat beat Splyce in the match before also, the pressure will definitely be on G2 to avoid a third consecutive defeat.
H2k-Gaming have ended up top of group B at this stage, ahead of the Unicorns and Splyce. Group B looks also to be equally unpredictable with all three of these teams having won 3 and lost only 1; Unicorns beating H2k, H2k beating Splyce, and Splyce beating the Unicorns. H2k and the Unicorns both definitely have the toughest games of the week however, facing Fnatic and G2 respectively, which could see Splyce going top if they beat Roccat and results go their way.
One thing is definitely for certain though this split. EU LCS newcomers Ninjas in Pyjamas and Mysterious Monkeys (formerly Misfits Academy and Fnatic Academy) already appear to be dead favourites to be in the relegation/play-offs. Both teams have lost all of their matches so far and both are yet to win a game in the EU LCS.
It’s terrible to rule both teams out so early on but neither team looks like they will be able to match their counterparts, particularly this weekend against Fnatic and H2k. Team Vitality also need to up their game if they are to survive this split without facing relegation, but they face a tough game against Misfits who want to continue their good form.
Overall this really could be a crucial weekend in the EU LCS Summer Split and for teams seeking to qualify for the World Championship.
