Activision and Sledgehammer Games took to the stage at the BFI IMAX in London today to officially unveil the first look at the upcoming Call of Duty: WWII.
The unveiling revealed the first story details of the game including the first trailer, a release date, screenshots, and details of the game’s multiplayer.
Set from 1944 to 1945, Call of Duty: WWII will focus on the actions of a squad of ordinary men turned soldiers in the 1st Infantry Division as they fight to preserve freedom in the face of tyranny. The squad will have to fight their way through occupied France, Belgium, and across the Rhine into Germany.
The story will also touch on events from 1940 to 1944 to help set the stage for the narrative and establish the characters.
“This is based on one of the most monumental moments in human history, and we get to honor and respect that global sacrifice, to honor the men and women who fought for freedom on all fronts, on a global scale,” said Michael Condrey, Sledgehammer Games.
Glen Schofield, also of Sledgehammer Games, added, “The story Call of Duty: WWII follows a global and diverse cast, but for me it honors my father Ronald ‘Red’ Daniels and his squad, and not just what they went through from a global perspective, but what they went through personally. We like to tell a story within a story, and this is no different.”
Players will also venture through iconic locations such as the European Theatre, Hürtgen Forest, and Normandy.
The game multiplayer is set for its own unveiling at this year’s E3 but some of its elements were revealed including a narrative-driven mode bringing a new layer of excitement to Axis vs. Allies team play, a new approach to Create-a-Class and character customisation enabling players to enlist in a division and rise in the ranks, and a brand new social feature where players can rallyu and interact with fellow soldiers.
A private beta will also be available first on PlayStation 4, scheduled for later this year, to those who pre-order the title now.
Call of Duty: WWII will release on November 3, 2017 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
