We believe in girl power here at Roobla – so after our video on 5 Male Actors We Would Like to See Make A Comeback, it’s time to take a look at 5 absent actresses who we’d love to see return.
1. Mara Wilson
Child stars don’t come much more prolific than Mara Wilson, who is best known for her roles in Matilda (1996), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and A Simple Wish (1997). Her last major film role was in Thomas and the Magic Railroad back in 2000 – which was enough to put her off acting, but apparently not Alec Baldwin.
Behind the cutesy kid on screen, however, Mara struggled with anxiety and depression through her teens. She has retrospectively stated in an interview with The Guardian that ‘being cute just made me miserable’ (we feel your pain Mara). Now Mara appears to be regaining her confidence, teaming up with projects to help others fight mental illness. If being cute was the issue, Mara could certainly return to film in a different genre. An action-thriller adaptation of A Simple Wish? Matilda the horror movie?
2. Meg Ryan
It’s been 27 years since Meg Ryan memorably showed the world how easy it is to fake an orgasm in When Harry Met Sally (1989). But Ryan’s career has been peppered with 3-4-year long hiatus’, with recent returns to acting being few and far between.
Attempts to step away from her Rom-Com typecast have been largely unsuccessful – such as the action-thriller My Mom’s New Boyfriend (2008) which enjoyed the reception of bringing McDonalds to a dinner party. It feels like the Ryan we know and love from classics like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless In Seattle (1993) may be lost forever. But surely this relative quiet period is a good time for Ryan to return to her roots in rom-coms?
3. Molly Ringwald
Molly Ringwald’s presence in the trio of John Hughes films that defined a generation of teens rendered her an icon of 80s film. Indeed – her roles in Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985) and Pretty in Pink (1986) meant that Ringwald was considered one of the most promising young actresses of her time.
By the noughties, however, she had firmly moved away from the big screen. Instead, Ringwald was singing on Broadway, releasing albums as a solo artist, took a number of TV roles and casually found the time on the side to write three books. OK Molly, we get it, you’re super multi-talented and we suck at everything. Now can you come back?
4. Bridget Fonda
Moving on neatly from teen coming-of-age films, Bridget Fonda earned her acting stripes in a whole different ball park. Breaking into the spotlight with her role in The Godfather Part III (1990), Fonda went on to play some challenging and, at times, incredibly dark roles in titles such as Single White Female (1992), Point of No Return (1993) and Scandal (1989).
Fonda became much more than a pretty face and won multiple nominations and awards for her performances. Yet she seemed to lose momentum and had given up acting by the noughties – apparently to start a family with Danny Elfman, lead singer of the band Oingo Boingo. If you are unacquainted with Oingo Boingo, they are as mellow and sane as they sound. But could Bridget not squeeze in another film around the school run?
5. Phoebe Cates
Phoebe Cates was another example of a teen star who shot to stardom in the 80s in titles such as Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982), Private School (1983) and Gremlins (1984). However, much like many of the actresses on this list, the mid-90s seemed to come along like a career-ending plague and Cates disappeared from the scene.
Like Fonda, Cates had decided to leave acting for motherhood by 1994. Granted, her recent films at the time such as Gremlins 2 (1990), Drop Dead Fred (1991) and Princess Caraboo (1994) were fairly poor and so we didn’t miss her immediately. However, it is nearly 23 years on and we are still all watching and watching again Cates’ slo-mo bikini walk out of the pool from Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Phoebe – we’re begging for you back.
Is there anyone you would add to this list or maybe you’d rather not see one of our choices ever feature on a cinema screen again? Let us know in the comments below.
