David Beckham set for cameo in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur

Former England, Manchester United and Real Madrid great, David Beckham, who is potentially in line for a knighthood for his services to football, is also in line to cameo as a disgruntled knight who fails to extract Excalibur from the stone in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming King Arthur.

Film Divider reports that Beckham is said to express disbelief and bewilderment that young Arthur is able to pull off the famous feat: “There’s a little bit of a sense that Beckham’s character, who fancies himself a big player in this story, gets a little ticked off when this other fellow, this upstart, is the one who can free the sword,”.

Ritchie is said to have seasoned the traditional King Arthur story with pop culture quirks and tinges, and Beckham’s presence illustrates that. It has also been reported that Ritchie will be including explicit and relatable football puns in Beckham’s scene. The pair previously worked together on an H&M commercial in 2013, in which Beckham loses the majority of his clothes and hilariously attempts to retrieve them whilst running around an upmarket resort.

The British director, known for making a variety of films that are both gritty and quirky, kick-started Vinnie Jones‘ acting career with the iconic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Jones played the hilarious, no-nonsense Big Chris character that actually well-resembled his footballing career. Jones has gone on to make regular appearances in various Hollywood films. Beckham himself has had various cameo appearances in films such as the GOAL! trilogy and of course, Gurinder Chadha’s Bend it like Beckham – perhaps in a larger role like this one, it will gain the football star filmic recognition.

King Arthur: Knights of the Round Table, is said to be the first of six films starring Charlie Hunnam as the king himself, Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Guinevere, Eric Bana as Uther Pendragon, Djimon Hounsou as Bedivere and Jude Law as villain Vortigen. Warner Bros. are yet to confirm whether the reports are true, but with this news developing they will surely comment on its validity very soon.
