Shrek to cameo in Puss in Boots 2?

Shrek, voiced by Mike Myers became a favourite for families when the big green ogre hit our screens in 2001. He returned in sequels and spin-offs totalling four films which grossed over three million dollars worldwide. Shrek has been missing from any new action for quite some time now due to some public woes Dreamworks Animation have been facing over the past few years. Shrek Forever After was named as the last film in the Shrek series and the last time we would see Shrek, Fiona and Donkey. However, it was hinted last year by the CEO of Dreamworks Animation that there could be a fifth film. Jeffrey Katzenberg stated “…I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the ‘Shrek’ series.”

What with all that waiting, could we be seeing a peek of him in the upcoming spin-off Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Theives? Originally Puss in Boots is a Shrek-free affair, but Antonio Banderas, who voices the eccentric moggy, stated that he had “heard some rumours that Shrek may be coming back,” and later said that he felt it would be great to have Shrek as a cameo in his movie.

The first Puss in Boots movie hit cinema screens in 2011 and was a successful spin-off from the Shrek movie series, grossing an incredible $555 million alone. The success of the first movie paved the way for a sequel which, under its original director Chris Miller, was due to be released in December 2018, however a company-wide restructuring initiative which included layoffs of around 500 people, pushed the movie back into development. Banderas was quoted as saying: “ They are restructuring the script now. We started…but that’s the process. A lot of people participate in the creation of the script and the story and the narrative, everything. And they include you!” going on to say “They take you to California and you read the script with them, give them your ideas, and a couple of months later you see a new script where everything has been touched up.”

20^th Century Fox are serving as distributor for the movie with Guillermo del Toro returning to his role of executive producer.
