Harry Kane has gone from strength to strength this season; he’s already bagged 13 goals in the Premier League and leads Tottenham’s all-competition list with 21. He ranks fourth on the current top goal scorer charts in the Premier League with fellow English break-through Charlie Austin. However is it too early to say that Harry Kane is the next golden English striker? We have been here before. How many times has a young English talent been burdened with the title of ‘the next big thing?’
Harry Kane’s attributes were arguably under-appreciated last season, when he first broke through into the Spurs team. Many believed him to be a strong centre forward, blessed with pace and an ability to latch onto balls into the box, however his intricate ball play and technical ability was initially overlooked. Along with his capacity to drop back and help out defensively, it becomes clear he is not simply a fox in the box. Harry Kane – The Complete Striker? At the moment he certainly fits the part.
Can he keep it up? Football is a funny game. As we all know, players can go from goals to nothing almost over night. Kane’s team-mate Robert Soldado has struggled massively since coming to the England, and how many times has Emmanuel Adebayor had a ‘come back’ goal flurry? But as long as Harry can stay injury free and avoid overuse by club and country, there is no reason why he couldn’t reach the top.
The big question at the moment is – Should he start for England? He is a member of the Under 21s squad which has access to a promising crop of Premier League regulars, including Jack Wilshere, Phil Jones and Raheem Sterling. Would it be worth bringing Harry Kane into the Senior England team, rather than leaving him and similarly talented peers to develop together in the under 21s World Cup? Maybe we should learn from our previous early-promoted failures; Andy Carroll, Wilfried Zaha…
It is worth noting that currently there are three in-form English strikes in the league; Charlie Austin and Danny Ings alongside Kane. Would it be worth considering them as well? Furthermore, we recently had the saviour of the English strike force, Daniel Sturridge, return from injury.
One final topic is his worth – if he continues this form then there will no doubt be bids, rumours already linking him with Real Madrid. However, cost is inflated with form. Who would now pay 25 million for the slumping Christian Benteke, for instance? It will be interesting to hear about any contract negotiations which may take place as Kane begins to recognise his own value.
Harry Kane has grown into a phenomenal player over the last 6 months, his movement and footballing intelligence are both invaluable to Spurs this season. Only Lionel Messi has scored more goals this calendar year in Europe, and with Wayne Rooney being dropped back into midfield by the tactically baffling Louis Van Gaal, it may well be time for England to call on the goal scoring machine.
