[dropcap]A[/dropcap] brand new video game based on Lord of the Rings will be coming to next-generation consoles, Warner Brothers Interactive announced Tuesday.
In a press release, Warner Brothers said that the new Lord of the Rings game, currently titled “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor”, will be a third-person action game set in the franchises’ fictional setting, Middle-earth, and will explore “an original story of vengeance and redemption”.
The game is to be released for next-generation consoles PS4 and Xbox One whilst versions for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC are to be released as well. No release date or expected release window was announced.
The release, excitedly, read: “Gamers will take on the role of Talion, a valiant ranger whose family is slain in front of him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor, moments before his own life is taken. Resurrected by a Spirit of vengeance and empowered with Wraith abilities, Talion ventures into Mordor and vows to destroy those who have wrong him. Through the course of his personal vendetta, Talion uncovers the truth of the Spirit that compels him, learns the origins of the Rings of Power and ultimately confronts his true nemesis.”
Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President for Production and Development at Warners Brothers Interactive, said: “In ‘Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor,’ players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death. The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players.”
According to the release, players will be able to form enemies through their own actions and decisions, enabling them to create their own battles, enemies and rewards thanks to the game’s unique Nemesis System.
The game is being developed by Monolith Productions – developers of the F.E.A.R and Condemned series – in collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises. Peter Jackson and artists from Weta Workshop – who worked on the film adaptation of the Lord of the Rings trilogy – are also lending a helping hand with settings, characters and story.
