[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ollowing his critically-appreciated performance in the late Yash Chopra’s final directorial venture Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan makes a return with the action/comedy Chennai Express. Directed by Rohit Shetty, Shah Rukh will be seen paired opposite Deepika Padukone, who collaborated previously in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om (2007).
The film is about a middle aged man named Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), who lives in Mumbai and is sent on a mission to Tamil Nadu to disperse his grandfather’s ashes in Rameshwaram. It is during his journey to the region that he encounters a South Indian girl named Meena (Deepika Padukone) from an orthodox family. Though both fall in love, the clash of cultures results in Rahul facing a number of challenges within an unfamiliar region, where its people speak a language which he does not understand a word of. Chennai Express is an action-packed romantic film, with the tagline ‘come fall in love Rohit Shetty style.’
The music to Chennai Express has been composed by popular duo Vishal-Shekhar, who have been behind the success of Bollywood soundtracks such as Kahaani (2012) and Student of the Year (2012). The album contains 8 rhythmic tunes, including the title track ‘Chennai Express’, which is specially sung by the legendary S P Balasubramaniam. The lyrics for the album have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
Earlier last week, the soundtrack to the film was launched in the Bollywood capital Mumbai, where Shah Rukh said the following. “Music breathes life into a film and Vishal-Shekhar have exactly done that with the songs of Chennai Express. I have always had a great working experience with them. There’s a song for everyone in the album. My personal favourites are Tera Raasta Chodu Na and Titli. Hope you’ve liked them too!”
Deepika also added to the comments regarding the film’s soundtrack: “Chennai Express has been a reunion of sorts for me. My first film was with SRK as a co-star, Manish Malhotra did my costumes and Vishal-Shekhar composed the music. I love all the songs and the way Vishal-Shekhar have beautifully amalgamated the theme and the tracks…”
“I am very excited about the music of our film because of Vishal and Shekhar,” said director Rohit Shetty during the music launch. “They have put together a brilliant album keeping the theme of the film in mind. Having worked with them for Golmaal 1, I am very glad that we have come together for Chennai Express too.”
You can catch Chennai Express at a cinema near you this Eid on 8 August 2013. In the meantime, check out the trailer to the film below:
