[dropcap]F[/dropcap]rom Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Romp Pictures comes Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, a true story based on the life of Indian athlete Milkha Singh. The film features Bollywood star Farhan Akhtar as the sporting legend, with leading actress Sonam Kapoor as his love interest. Sonam was recently seen in the blockbuster hit Raanjhnaa, which was praised by critics worldwide. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who was behind the successes of Rang De Basanti (2006) and Delhi-6 (2009).
The film begins with the murder of Milkha’s family in 1947 during the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan. Milkha’s struggles and endeavours are illustrated throughout the film and he ultimately becomes one of India’s premier sportsmen. The film also showcases Milkha’s famous loss during the 400 metre race at the Rome Olympics. According to the film’s synopsis, though he lost this race, he ultimately won in life!
Milkha Singh’s life is a portrait of professional triumph over personal tragedy. The film attempts to understand a catastrophic loss that was deemed a sure victory and explores through the darkness of disgrace Milkha Singh’s redemption and catharsis that came when he confronted his past. The film draws an intricate image of human trials, setbacks and fate leveraged against the sheer power of will as Milkha Singh evocatively illustrates that true victory lies in racing with one’s troubles and not in running away from them.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag also stars Art Malik (from BBC’s Holby City), as well as Rebecca Breeds (Home and Away) in supporting roles. The story has been written by Prasoon Joshi, with the music to the film being composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The film releases in cinemas worldwide on 12thJuly 2013, so be sure to catch this highly-talked about Bollywood film, which has been described as Farhan Akhtar’s most demanding role to date.
