2011 Bafta nominations announced!

Awards season is well and truly upon us. The glitzy Golden Globes inevitably bought out the inner fashionista in us all whilst Ricky Gervais split opinion in his role as host with jokes made at Hollywood’s expense… in a room filled with Hollywood’s finest. Oops.

Whilst the former sent the magazine world into frenzy (we particularly liked Natalie Portman’s dress), the latter made some A-list enemies with his ill-fated jokes that saw him begin to flail around like a drowning young stand-up. Despite Gervais’s stint as host (reportedly being taken ill for an hour of the event), the 68th Golden Globes ceremony was a success, seeing both predictable and surprising gongs being awarded. Notable victories included The Social Network receiving the award for best motion picture, Colin Firth nabbing best actor for his role in The King’s Speech and best actress going to Natalie Portman who plays Nina in Black Swan. Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and David Fincher also received awards for best supporting actor, best supporting actress and best director respectively.

Now all eyes turn to Britain for the hugely anticipated Baftas. With the nominees already having been announced, who do you want to win the prestigious categories? Fill in our survey at the bottom of this entry and let us know!

Arguably the most interesting section is the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award. With previous winners including Kristin Stewart, James McAvoy and Shia LeBeouf, who will be crowned this year? Nominees include Gemma Arteton who has starred in a diverse selection of films ranging from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time to The Disappearance of Alice Creed, the new Spidey Andrew Garfield and Bronson‘s Tom Hardy. With the category being the only one viewers have control over the Rising Star award allows for a true reflection of audience opinion. To have your say, vote here.

As with all prestigious film award ceremonies, audience-friendly big hitters have been omitted from nomination lists in favour for the likes of Black Swan, 127 Hours, The King’s Speech and True Grit. That’s not to say that this year’s Baftas haven’t caused controversy, with eyebrows being raised at their decision to overlook Ishiguro- adaptation Never Let Me Go.

Set to be held on 13th February, the Baftas are the second stepping stone toward the Oscars. Announced on 25th January and ready with its red carpet a month after, the Oscars ceremony is set to see hotly tipped favourites battle it out. One thing we’d like to know is how James Franco will fare if faced with the challenge of presenting himself with best actor gong for 127 Hours (if nominated) as he’s hosting the event with Anne Hathaway… hmm….
