Yes that’s right, like a bizarre piece of fan fiction, Magneto will be officiating Professor X’s wedding.
Sir Ian Mckellen, 73, revealed the news on last weeks Jonathan Ross Show saying, “I’m going to marry Patrick [Stewart]. I am going to officiate at his wedding.”
The two have long been close friends, having starred in numerous stage productions together since 1977, as well as three X-Men films. McKellen revealed that this is not the first time he has officiated a friends wedding, having previously married two friends in a civil partnership.
Offering some insight into how he can legally marry Stewart, 72, and his fiancée Sunny Ozell, 35, McKellen said, “I don’t know, but in Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny and Patrick will then be married.”
McKellen will be permitted a “One Day Marriage Designation”. Offered by the Massachusetts’ Secretary of Commonwealth, the service requires a one-time fee of $25 and in return a friend or relative can legally officiate a couple’s wedding ceremony.
Both Stewart and McKellen will be back as their now iconic roles of Magneto and Professor X in X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is out July 18th 2014. In the meantime, the two are starring in not one but two theatre productions together in Broadway revivals of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot.
