You’ve no doubt read the stories, seen the clips and read the tweets, but Jodie Foster’s speech after winning the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award has become an entity in its own right. It’s a conversation starter or a neat little silence filler, if talk of the weather has died down.
In the presence of her two sons Charles, 14 and Kit, 12 she thanked just about everyone she had ever worked with. Her moving tributes to not only her sons and ex-partner Cydney Bernard, but also her mother, Evelyn who is battling dementia, left most of the attendees in tears. However, it left us with more questions than answers.
“This feels like the end of one era and the beginning of something else. Scary and exciting and now what? Well, I may never be up on this stage again, on any stage for that matter. Change, you gotta love it.”
She told reporters backstage that she didn’t mean she was retiring from acting, but it’s understandable how people would reach that conclusion from her words.
The second question to arise from the evening was the thorny subject of paternity. She has never revealed his name, but there have been rumours that she will be telling her children who their father is when they are 21 years old. Considering the age difference, poor Charlie may have to wait until he is 23, unless she’ll be telling them independently, or maybe those rumours are just that, rumours.
Strangely, Mel Gibson has been touted as a possible candidate, after some viewers thought they saw a resemblance between him and the two boys. A US paper was told by an amateur genealogist that they look just like him, but blonder. However, previous reports have always speculated that Foster’s late friend Randy Stone was the father.
Away from Jodie, it was a good night for the casts of Les Miserables and Django Unchained, but the real stand outs were Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Taking over the hosting duties from Ricky Gervais, they were witty and self-deprecating, and although they made the obligatory jokes at the expense of the industry, they were well received. Even now a few days after the event, people are praising the duo for their efforts. Quite a few of those people have also mentioned the nominations for Best Actress in a Comedy award, where Will Farrell and Kristen Wiig seemingly ad-libbed the list of nominees. The audience was in raptures, with the exception of Tommy Lee Jones who sat stony faced throughout the entire section. Not his type of humour or just having a bad day? Adele was also on hand to provide a breath of Tottenham air, as she accepted her award for Best Original Song for Skyfall she confessed that she had been ‘pissing herself laughing’ all evening.
There will no doubt be more Jodie news in the coming days, as it’s just one of those stories that will run and run. When a famously private actress gives us an inch, it’s only natural that we would be interested in what the rest of the mile holds. Who knows if the rest of the winners will get a look-in.
