Skyfall, the latest addition to the James Bond franchise, is now officially the biggest selling film of the year in the UK. The movie has clocked up over £57 million in just two weeks, knocking Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises out of the top spot.
This means that Skyfall, directed by Sam Mendes, is now also the biggest-selling Bond film of all time in the UK, surpassing even 2006’s Casino Royale, which achieved £55.6 million. The film is set for release in the US this weekend, where it is expected to take in approximately $70 million; all of which means that Skyfall is on course to become the highest-grossing Bond film of all time, not just in the UK, but worldwide.
Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of Eon, the production company behind Bond, have said that they are “…thrilled and proud to reach this box-office landmark in record time, and are delighted that UK audiences continue to enjoy Skyfall.”
The current top Bond is still Casino Royale, which achieved a worldwide gross of $594 million – but, Skyfall is predicted to smash this record as well. The release of the latest film was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Bond franchise, an event that was also recognised at this year’s BAFTA awards, which opened with Tom Jones’ rendition of Bond theme song ‘Thunderball’ while a montage of favourite Bond moments screened in the background.
Skyfall is receiving excellent reviews, and is perhaps on the way to becoming the best reviewed Bond film since Sean Connery’s heyday. A different sort of Bond movie with a personal and almost gothic atmosphere, it manages originality and innovation, but without straying too far from the classic Bond template. It continues to screen to packed theatres in the UK despite having been on general release for a fortnight. It’ll certainly be exciting to see just how high Skyfall can fly…
