While sequels fill the theatres these days, there’s one that won’t be returning. Lethal Weapon will have to find a new Martin Riggs as the actor dismisses returning for a proposed fifth outing. It’s true – Mel Gibson says goodbye to Riggs.
Mel Gibson has quashed rumours of him returning as Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon 5. Having starred in the previous 4 outings, Gibson has ruled himself out of any proposed additions to the popular series, but seemed to believe a remake would be the way forward.
‘No, I think the way things are going with Total Recall, they’ll just remake those somehow. Though it’s really tough to replace Danny [Glover]. He was so amazing in those things.’
Lethal Weapon 4 was released in 1998, 11 years after the original burst on to our screens. One of the original ‘buddy cop’ movies, it paved the way for a slew of pretenders. Rush Hour, Bad Boys and our own Hot Fuzz have since filled the void, but there are always calls for Riggs and Murtaugh to return.
Gibson’s career had taken a downward turn in recent times, but the actor has recently completed the Robert Rodriguez vehicle Machete Kills. This will hit our screens in 2013.
