Avengers Assemble was the blockbuster of the summer. The ensemble cast provided the action that everyone wanted to (and did) see. So we were a bit concerned when rumours swirled about Joss Whedon not being on board for the sequel. Thankfully those rumours have proved to be just that as Whedon returns for an Avengers sequel, as yet un-named…
Disney has confirmed that Joss Whedon will return to write and direct the sequel, delighting fans of the original which was released to acclaim in April. There is already speculation that the sequel, provisionally entitled Avengers 2, will be released in May 2015.
The news got even better for fans of the Marvel franchise. Whedon has also been signed up to help develop a new live action television series for ABC. It seems to be all systems go for the Buffy creator, as Disney also confirmed that he will be contributing creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe. We’re not entirely sure what that will entail, but it seems everything is moving in the right direction for both Whedon and Marvel.
Although we’re going to have to wait another three years for Avengers 2, there will still be plenty to keep us occupied while we wait. Iron Man 3 is due next year, with Tony Stark allegedly travelling to China. We also have Thor: The Dark World on the horizon with the plot following on from Thor and Loki’s shenanigans in Avengers Assemble. Then, last but not least, Captain America: The Winter Soldier catapults back onto the big screen in 2014. Steve Rogers, with the help of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D, is still trying to integrate into modern society.
Now patience is not our strong point, but at least we’ll have the DVD release of Avengers Assemble in September to tide us over. 17th of September to be exact. Better pre-order it, just to be safe.
