Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, the name Mr. Grey will no doubt provoke many a differing thought. Whether you’ve read or are currently reading the trilogy, or are a Fifty Shades widower (or widow), chances are that you will have heard the name mentioned once or twice. At first in hushed whispers over the morning break at work, to the full-on discussions that are now taking place everywhere you turn. Who will play Christian Grey?
The erotic fiction by author E. L. James has taken the world by storm and has been many a conversation starter. People are almost being judged depending on whether they’ve read it or not. Sit in any tea room, or glance around the bus on your way to work and you’re likely to see at least one person eagerly turning the page, wondering what deliciously sadistic act will be next.
Everyone has their own interpretation of who should play the two lead characters, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. However, the list is slowly reducing to a handful that fans deem acceptable. One thing that seems to be quite unanimous is the suggestion that Twilight stars, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart should not play the adventurous pair, even though the book originated from Twilight fan fiction. Speaking at Comic Con, Pattinson bizarrely said that he would ‘lick the pages’ of the book when the subject arose. However, the few fans who would’ve been overjoyed to see Pattinson in the role have faced disappointment, after the author said ‘it would be weird’ to have either of the pair in the lead roles.
Which actress eventually picks up the wrist cuffs of college graduate Anastasia, is almost second fiddle to the real question of who will play Mr. Grey. That hasn’t stopped the role being one of the hottest in Hollywood. As well as Kristen Stewart, Ashley Benson has thrown her name into the hat, along with other internet based suggestions. Glee’s Dianna Agron, Emma Stone and even Emma Watson have been mentioned. It will be a hard task to find the perfect actress to play the blue eyed, pale skinned submissive brunette.
And now to the main event. Channing Tatum has teased fans by saying he is willing to play Mr. Grey – but only if his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, is cast as Ana. Listening to the numerous discussions and dreamy suggestions that are arising everywhere you turn, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the casting.
Matt Bomer is a name that keeps being mentioned. The former Tru Calling, Chuck and White Collar star seems to invoke all the necessary qualities to play the dominating role, although he may have some stiff competition in the form of Ian Somerhalder. The Vampire Diaries alumni has some strong backing amongst fans, even though he had previously tweeted that he is ‘not desperate’ to play the role. Other actors being mentioned are Ryan Gosling, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chase Crawford and, all the way from left field, Zachery Levi.
One thing we do know for certain is who will be producing the film; the team behind The Social Network, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will be running the show.
Although cast and director are still unknown, Brett Easton Ellis, the man behind American Psycho, has put himself forward to write the adaptation. Whether his offer will be accepted, is another matter.
Now, back to Mr Grey and his red room.
