Movie News: Cannes 2012 – Line-Up Announced

The line-up for the 65th Cannes Film Festival has now been announced! Vying for the Palme d’Or this year will be films from directors Michael Haneke, Ken Loach, David Cronenberg, Abbas Kiarostami, Alain Resnais, and many more.

Chosen to open the festival on May 16th is US director Wes Anderson’s latest, Moonrise Kingdom, a comedy set in a summer camp in the 1960’s. Anderson is the director of quirky comedies such as The Royal Tenenbaums and The Darjeeling Limited. Moonrise Kingdom is also in competition, and so has a shot at the Palme d’Or.

Anderson faces some stiff rivalry from European directors, including Michel Haneke, whose film Love will look at the lives of a retired couple after the wife has suffered a stroke. From Ken Loach, whose film The Wind that Shakes the Barley won the Palme d’Or in 2006, there will be The Angel’s Share, a comedy drama about a whiskey heist. Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson, will be David Cronenberg’s contribution to the competition, while Alain Resnais’ You Haven’t Seen Anything Yet and Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love will be ones to watch.

Also of interest at this year’s festival will be On the Road, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s famous Beat novel of the same name, directed by Walter Salles. Beasts of the Southern Wild, which took home the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance earlier this year, has grabbed itself a spot in Un Certain Regard, as has Argentinian director Pablo Trapero’s White Elephant.

Closing night will see a screening of Claude Miller’s Therese D; Audrey Tatou will star as an unhappily married woman attempting to break free from the constraints of her dull life. All of the films chosen for screening at Cannes so far are listed below, however the line-up is subject to change; for example, Woody Allen’s latest To Rome with Love was not included in the line-up released today, but may be announced at a later date.
