In a startling turn of events, Aml Ameen has left Netflix’s Sense8 (2015). His character, Capheus, has been recast and will be played Toby Onwumere.
Though information is so far scarce on the exact reason behind Ameen’s exodus from the series, sources have described a confrontation between Ameen and one of Sense8’s creators, Lana Wachowski, during a table read through in Berlin as the beginning of the troubles. The relationship between Ameen and the show continued to deteriorate through filming in India. Eventually, a few episodes in, Ameen was fired from the show and the role was recast. Toby Onwumere (Ameen’s replacement) is a recent graduate of UC San Diego’s MFA Acting department and according to his IMDB page appeared in The Book of Dallas (2012) as Empty Suit.
Reaction to the cast change has been mixed, with much of the fanbase confused as to why the shakeup was necessary. Jamie Clayton – who plays Nomi Marks, one of the sensate and a political activist and hacker on the show – quickly took to Twitter to clarify the situation. While Clayton remained elusive to the cause and details of the situation, she described the cast change as: “THE WRITING & CHARACTER CAN SHINE AS THEY WERE MEANT TO!” (All-Caps hers).
Sense8, created by Lanna and Lilly Wachowski and Michael Straczynski, follows the story of eight men and women across the globe who one day find themselves linked psychically: the sensates. Capheus, one of the sensates, is a young man working as a bus driver in Nairobi in order to afford his mother’s AIDS medication; he is a fan favourite because of his optimism and ability to inspire others.
Sense8 was the first television series to be created under the banner of Straczynski’s Studio JMS. Among its vast cast are Tuppence Middleton, Naveen Andrews, Freema Agyeman, and Daryl Hannah.
No release date for Season 2 has been announced yet beyond a tentative ‘late 2016.’
