Well stone me, there’s a new plonker in town! Golden Balls himself, David Beckham, will be popping down to Peckham to make an appearance in the forthcoming Sport Relief Only Fools and Horses special.
The news comes just days after the sad passing of Roger Lloyd-Pack, who played the dim-witted Trigger for over two decades.
Somewhat unfittingly for clean-living Becks, this short episode will take place in a greasy spoon cafe; although perhaps this is preferable to the ex-England skipper knocking back a few pina coladas in the Nags Head! Either way, Beckham and comedy seem to mix pretty well, as his partaking in several other charity comedy skits, particularly the unforgettable interview with Mrs Merton, can testify.
This might be just the tonic for Only Fools afficianados, who are still drying their eyes at the loss of their beloved Trigger, especially as it is hoped that this latest sketch could be the catalyst of a new dawn for the sitcom. Its still unrivalled popularity will go some way to aiding the process, while at the same time increasing the Sport Relief audience and donations even further.
All of this will see Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst team-up as Del Boy and Rodney for the first time since 2003. Only Fools began life back in 1981, with the initial series picking up comparitively modest viewing figures. This soon altered, however, and the 1996 Christmas special broke all records with a whopping 24 million people tuning in.
Sport Relief will run from 21-23 March, with the return of the Trotters due to be screened on the opening night; by which time the question over whether or not there will be a new series could be ‘purely epidemic’.
