2016 claims the life of another famous musician, this time Leon Russell, a brilliant pianist and best known for the hit songs ‘A Song For You‘ and ‘Shine a Light (Get a Line on You)‘
Russell, who was 74 years of age, “passed away in his sleep” a statement upon his website solemnly read.
Leon Russell was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and first emerged in the music industry when he was merely 14, playing in local nightclubs. By the 1950’s Russell moved to Los Angeles to become what is known as a ‘session musician’ playing the piano for other musicians. During the 1970’s Russell became a solo artist primarily yet persisted with other musical groups. His famous hit ‘Shine a Light‘ was featured on The Rolling Stones’ 1972 album Exile on Main St.
Russell who has been performing a combination of gospel-influenced southern boogie piano rock, blues, and country music, for over five decades was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011.
