BAFTA 2012 – The Nominees

We take a look at the 2012 BAFTA nominees...
The BAFTA nominations for 2012 were announced this week; silent film The Artist picked up the most nods, closely followed by British favourite Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

The Artist was nominated for 12 awards in all, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress, while Tinker, Tailor (which was completely ignored at the recent Golden Globes) followed close behind with 11. Joining them in competition for Best Film are Drive, The Help, and The Descendants starring George Clooney.

In contrast, Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady has received only four nominations: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor for Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent respectively, Best Original Screenplay for writer Abi Morgan, and Best Make-up and Hair. The film has been snubbed for both Best Film and Outstanding British Film; instead the British only category has opted for some edgier nominees, including Steve McQueen’s Shame, starring Michael Fassbender as an alienated sex addict, and We Need to Talk about Kevin, a dark tale of a high school massacre directed by Lynne Ramsay.

Joining Meryl Streep in the running for Best Actress are Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk about Kevin), Viola Davis (The Help), Berenice Bejo (The Artist), and Michelle Williams for her portrayal of the original blonde bombshell in My Week With Marilyn. The race for Best Actor seems far too close to call, as leading men Brad Pitt (Moneyball), Gary Oldman (Tinker, Tailor), George Clooney (The Descendants), Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Michael Fassbender (Shame) all prepare to battle it out. George Clooney has already won a Golden Globe for his role in The Descendants, but he faces some arguably stiffer competition at the BAFTAs.

Other nominees to keep an eye on at this year’s awards include Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s chilling body-horror film The Skin I Live In; starring Antonio Banderas (aka Puss in Boots) as a psychotic plastic surgeon, the movie is nominated in the Best Foreign Film category. The Artist, Tinker, Tailor, Hugo and War Horse are all nominated for Original Music, but hotly tipped to win this year are Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, composers for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the two have already received an Oscar for their work on Fincher’s The Social Network).
