It’s a ‘no’ from Colin Trevorrow

Jurassic World director says he won't helm a sequel

Bookies everywhere should be on the alert, because the news that Colin Trevorrow won’t be directing a sequel to Jurassic World means that a whole host of filmmakers will hope to be odds-on favourite for the job.

The air of expectancy surrounding the impending release of the fourth instalment of the franchise means that a follow-up is as good as a done deal, but with this meteoric decision it means that the big question is who will be at the helm?

To be fair to the man himself, he put forward a very well-reasoned argument as to why he’s choosing to bow out after one film by saying: “Jurassic Park is like Star Wars. Different directors can give a different taste to each movie. I would be involved in some way, but not as director.” Although last year, things sounded very different when he said that Jurassic World was “something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story.”

Still, at least he’s not leaving altogether, and perhaps working in another capacity for a subsequent sequel was always a possibility in his own mind. After all, Steven Spielberg himself, who was in the chair for the first two movies, took the role of executive producer for the third and will do so for this latest instalment. Yes, there’s certain to be a place for Trevorrow on the Good Ship Jurassic.

That’s not to say that the big cheeses won’t try and lure him back somehow, but should he stand by his decision there’ll be some massive shoes to fill. Taking on a project like, well, any from the Jurassic Park franchise is not for the beginner. The fact that Trevorrow has been working with a budget nearing $200m shows that these dinosaurs are not toys and if anyone wants to pull the strings then they’d better know what they’re doing!

Still, before Jurassic World the Safety Not Guaranteed director wasn’t exactly a household name, so maybe there’s hope for us all. Who do you think would be a suitable replacement? Hit us with your comments below!
