Kristen Stewart got her big breakthrough from child star to famous blockbuster actress through the Twilight hysteria. It graced our cinemas through the years 2008 right through to 2012, sparking various memes through her lack of facial expression, but could that have been just down to her portrayal of a 2D character? Many people criticised Stewart’s ability as a serious actress and she sparked outrage with her fans when found cheating on her then boyfriend and apple of every teenager’s eye, Robert Pattinson. However, she did not let this bring her down and picked up her game with further notable roles such as Joan Jett in The Runaways, Cole in Camp X-Ray and, more recently, as Valentine in Clouds of Sils Maria.
Stewart attended this year’s Cesar Awards ceremony at the grand Chatelet Theatre in Paris, an event that is an equivalent to the ever-famous Oscars. She became the first American actress to receive a notable Cesar Award for Best Supporting Actress in Clouds of Sils Maria, where she played Valentine, personal assistant to Maria Enders, an actress. This was also significant in marking the first time in 30 years that an American had even been nominated in the running to receive this award. The last American to win one of these was Adrien Brody when he received a Cesar in 2003 for Best Actor, for his role of Wladyslaw Szpilman in The Pianist.
Kristen nailed her acceptance speech where she stated that there was “a great divide between what motivates people to make movies in the States and what motivated people to make movies here, and I prefer it here a little bit,” which is not surprising looking at all the bad press Hollywood have given her. She was also heard shouting “I love you, Juliette” in French, to her co-star playing the role of Maria Enders, Juliette Binoche. Kristen also mentioned that she will be starring in another French film, but disclosed no further information.
The film that won Kristen the Cesar award Clouds of Sils Maria is about veteran actress Enders, who comes face-to-face with a young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal when she agrees to take part in a revival of the play ‘MalojaSnake’, which launched her very own career 20 years earlier. Maria begins to see an unsettling resemblance of herself in the young star when she is cast opposite her. The film, which was featured at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and released in France on June 26, 2014, will be released in UK cinemas on May 15.
