Sigourney Weaver will play new character in Avatar sequels

James Cameron confirms that Weaver will be returning for all three planned Avatar sequels, but that she will be playing a totally new character

Director James Cameron has revealed that Sigourney Weaver will be returning to take a role in all three sequels he has planned for his blockbusting 2009 sci-fi Avatar.

Cameron released a statement confirming Weaver’s involvement with the sequels.

“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together,so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”

There are no other plot, script or character details available for the as yet untitled second film, but it looks as though Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will also be returning (presumably playing the same characters they did in Avatar). Stephen Lang, who played Quaritch, will also be back, despite the fact that (SPOILERS!) his character took two arrows to the chest at the end of the first film. Well, as Cameron has explained in an old interview with Vulture:

“Okay, here’s the deal. When you have a science fiction series, a science fiction franchise, you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!”

Cameron plans to shoot all three sequels back to back, and we can expect to see the first one hit our screens in December 2016.
