Trailer Review: Whiplash (2014)

Another brick in the wall.

Damien Chazelle’s new film, Whiplash received positive reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Now a trailer for the drama is online and it features the music teacher from hell.

The movie stars Miles Teller as Andrew Neyman, a new student at a prestigious music school. Neyman is keen to refine his craft and learn to be a better jazz drummer but his efforts are sabotaged by Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons.) Fletcher is a well respected teacher at the school and also a tyrant. He rules his students with an iron fist and he also punishes them severely when they make mistakes.

In the trailer, poor Neyman falls foul of Fletcher when he is unable to match the tempo of his fellow musicians in a rehearsal. It is clear from the outset that there is something sinister about Fletcher and it is only a matter of time before he goes into meltdown. Watching the trailer is akin to waiting for a stick of dynamite to go off which makes it tense. Simmons excels at playing tough characters and he is on fine form here. Teller is also good as a likeable kid just trying to do his best. It will be interesting to see how much punishment he can take before he cracks in the feature film.

Whiplash will be out in the US on October 10th, there is no UK release date yet but look out for it. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
