Trailer Review: The Expendables 3 (2014)

One last ride for The Expendables

A new trailer for The Expendables 3 is online and it features another impressive cast of action stars. These movies are all about getting a bunch of well known action veterans together and the series fills that niche very well. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Kelsey Grammer, Randy Couture and Robert Davi. It also features some newer, upcoming stars including Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz and Glen Powell.

Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis are not reprising their roles in this movie though which is a shame. It is also surprising that Steven Seagal and Danny Trejo are not appearing in the film either. The latter in particular recently reinvented himself as an action hero in the Machete films.

In this sequel, Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his team are betrayed by an old friend called Conrad Stonebanks ( Mel Gibson.) Stonebanks was a founding member of the team but has now become an arms dealer. It is unclear why he wants to wipe out his former teammates but no doubt the feature film will explain this.  Also, a film like The Expendables 3 doesn’t really need much of an excuse to blow things up anyway. Ross decides to recruit some new members to the team and together they all fight to take down Stonebanks.

The trailer focuses mainly on introducing the cast as all the main players are shown on-screen. There are also a few stunts, shoot outs and explosions thrown in though as is to be expected. These films may not be smart but they do have their merits as they feature humour, over the top stunts and good choreography. It is also cool to see old action veteran actors working together with younger stars. Some of the actors also have experience with martial arts in real life which makes their action scenes more authentic.

Interestingly enough, the trailer also reveals that this will be the “last ride” for the team. It will be cool to see how the writers wrap up the trilogy at the end of the film. If the all female version of The Expendables gets made then that could be the next chapter in the series.

The film will be released on August 15th, 2014. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
