Great news for London-based fans of Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli: BFI Southbank are screening a complete retrospective of Studio Ghibli films in April and May this year.
The retrospective is in honour of the retirement of prolific Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki (one half of Ghibli’s founding team, along with Isao Takahata) and his much anticipated final film The Wind Rises, which will be released in the UK on May 9th.
Of course, we’re still holding out hope that Miyazaki will not actually retire. After all, he has announced his retirement several times in the past and then popped back up for just one more film, so it’s certainly possible that we will be seeing more of his work in the future.
BFI Southbank will be screening everything from Miyazaki’s first commercial success, the pre-Ghibli Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), right up to more recent favourites such as Spirited Away and Ponyo, plus the studio’s latest offering The Wind Rises. Tickets are available now through the BFI website.
