Trailer review: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

It's man vs. ape in the trailer for this Planet of the Apes sequel

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a much darker film than its predecessor, this new trailer for the sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes is dark, grim and tense. The film stars Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri Russell and is directed by Matt Reeves. It takes place a decade after the events in the previous movie and it is clear a lot has changed since then.

In the film, the world has been ravaged by a devastating viral pandemic and the humans are fighting to survive. While all this is going on, a nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis) try to build a colony for themselves in a place they call Ape City. The movie is about them trying to establish a community for themselves and also the tensions that arise between the apes and humans. The mortals are led by a leader called Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) who sees the apes as a threat and wants to keep man as the dominant species on Earth. Jason Clarke has different ideas however as he plays a former architect keen to reach out to the apes and make peace between the species. He is fully aware that a war between the apes and humans could easily break out which would makes life worse for everyone.

The trailer is entertaining as it slowly reveals some of the main characters in the story, Dreyfus and Malcolm (Jason Clarke) are introduced and then Caesar himself is shown towards the end of the trailer flanked by his fellow apes. It is clear from the trailer that there is animosity between the species and this adds tension. It’s a good example of a trailer that makes an impact without being too long and without revealing too much.

Fans can catch the film when it is released on July 17th, 2014. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
