The Hobbit Extended Edition Release Date Confirmed

A release date for the extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been confirmed

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s has been the tradition with Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth movies, we are soon to be treated to an extended cut of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The release date for DVD and Blu-Ray has been confirmed as November 5th 2013 (the digital download will hit slightly earlier on October 22nd).

Anyone who is already a Lord of the Rings uber-fan will know that extended editions and behind-the-scenes footage are what this franchise is all about (does anyone actually bother to watch the theatrical releases of LOTR anymore? Fellowship without the ‘Lembas bread’ scene? You’ve got to be kidding, right?).

This cut of An Unexpected Journey will only have 13 minutes of extra footage, some of which has already been released online (including a cute scene between Bilbo and Elrond in Rivendell). This may not sound like much, especially when compared with the pretty major additions to LOTR, but it’s more than made up for by the amount of behind-the-scenes footage  – about nine hours of it, according to Warner Bros.

Nine hours – that’s basically an entire day’s worth of sitting mesmerised in front of yet another of Jackson’s engagingly addictive and seamlessly edited behind-the-scenes documentaries.  It’s a hard life for a Hobbit fan.

The November release will be very quickly followed by The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which will hit UK cinemas on December 13th, and judging by the trailer (elves, dwarves in barrels, more elves, a great big dragon, and an extra helping of elves), it’s going to melt us all into a large gooey puddle of fantasy genre bliss.
