Star Wars VII to be filmed in Britain

It has been revealed that filming for Star Wars VII will take place in Britain.

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen George Osborne started talking about Star Wars, you could be forgiven for thinking he was just trying to distract us post budget. But this time he is the bearer of good news, as he confirms that Star Wars is coming back to the UK.

“Go strap yourselves in. I’m going to make the jump to light speed.”

When Han Solo barked that order at the passengers of the Millennium Falcon, he was on his way to Alderaan and we all know how that turned out. Now the cast and crew are coming back to where it all started all those years ago with Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The studio filming for the original trilogy was predominately done in the UK and the prequels followed suit with Australia also being called upon to share the interior shooting. Osborne (who hopefully won’t go the way of another Chancellor we know) seems to be excited with his Tweet, not only confirming the news that Star Wars VII is on its way, but also signing off with “may the force be with us”. It will certainly be a boost for the economy and if the high streets are taking a battering, it hasn’t yet reached the entertainment industry which continues to thrive.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has said “We’ve devoted serious time and attention to revisiting the origins of Star Wars as inspiration for our process on the new movie and I’m thrilled that returning to the UK for production and utilizing the incredible talent there can be a part of that. Speaking from my own longstanding connection to the UK with films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire of the Sun, and recently War Horse,it’s very exciting to be heading back.”

The new JJ Abrams film has certainly reignited the love for the epic saga, as there have also been reports of a possible Star Wars Land on the Sabacc cards. CEO Bob Igor recently said “we’re also working on opportunities for television and our parks. It’s still very early in the process. We’ll announce details as these developments evolve.” There have been signs that Disney are planning to milk the Star Wars franchise for all its worth, with sequels and spins offs galore in the pipeline. Now with Disney World promoting an online questionnaire with queries about how interested peoplewould be in visiting a Star Wars themed land at the Disneyland Resort, they seemed to be testing the water about the park before any plans fully swing into gear. But before all of this, there’s the film to consider.

With the news of the location now public knowledge, it makes us at the Farm think back to the news earlier this year of the Bluewater shopping centre being touted as a possible location for shooting. Could this still come to fruition? Will we see an AT-AT roaming the limestone of the Gravesend countryside or a speeder rushing through the rolling hills and lush greenery of the Scottish Highlands? Either way, this generation will have the opportunity of experiencing the same excitement that those in 1976 had, when a galaxy far far away landed on their doorsteps.
