May’s Upcoming Video Game Releases

Take a look at what to expect from new video game releases this Month

2018 is going to be a big year for gaming. With Yakuza 6: The Song of Life and God of War having already been released, the rest of the year looks very exciting with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Hearts III, and Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch still to look forward to. This month sees the release of a few new games, but it seems to be the month for remasters and definitive releases. Here’s my top picks for May’s upcoming releases.

Hitman: Definitive Edition

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Release: May 15th

Taking elements from previous games in the Hitman series, IO Interactive has created the ultimate Hitman experience with this definitive edition. Stepping back into the shoes of Agent 47, players travel the globe in true Hitman style taking out high profile targets in whichever way they see fit. Hitman: Definitive Edition features all episodes of Hitman season one as well as four missions from the Patient Zero campaign and bonus missions based in Sapienza and Marrakesh. Players who purchase the Definitive Edition will also receive new outfits, weapons, and all contracts and challenge packs from Hitman season one and the game of the year edition.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Release: May 18th

The hack and slash collaboration between Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda and Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors was originally released on Wii U in 2014 and quickly became one of the console’s best-selling games, and in 2016 it was released on 3DS with updated gameplay featuring new characters and environments. Hyrule Warriors has now made its way over to the Switch in a Definitive Edition developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja. This new edition of course includes all features and DLC from previous versions, putting the total number of playable characters up to 29. The game also adds new costumes for Link and Zelda based on their appearances in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017).

Little Nightmares

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Release: May 18th

Take your childhood fears wherever you go! When Swedish indie Tarsier Studios released Little Nightmares on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC last year it received a lot praise for its uneasy atmosphere and dark visuals and sound. You can now experience this creepy puzzle platformer on Nintendo Switch where you embark on a journey to escape and reveal the secrets of a mysterious place inhabited by dangerous residents, known as The Maw. As well as the base game, the Switch version of Little Nightmares also features the Secret of Maw DLC.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

Release: May 18th

As part of the Shin Megami Tensei series’ 25th anniversary, ATLUS is releasing an enhanced port of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (2009) for the 3DS. The port will feature updated visuals with new artwork illustrated by Masayuki Doi, and the addition of voice acting. The most notable additions are the new narrative path that will be included as well as a brand-new character called Alex who will play a major role in how the story unfolds.

State of Decay 2

Platform: Xbox One, PC

Release: May 22nd

The sequel to Undead Labs’ Zombie survival game State of Decay (2013) is set 15 months after the events of the first game. Humanity is on the brink of extinction and it’s up to you to build a community and attempt to restore the world. State of Decay 2 introduces some new features to the series including a co-op multiplayer mode. What’s interesting about this mode is that the long-lasting consequence theme of the series applies to multiplayer as well, meaning that if your character dies in someone else’s online game, they’re gone forever. Undead Labs have also expanded on the character traits of the first game. Now there are over 1000 unique traits, each of which can have a different effect on character morale as well as certain traits being a requirement for in-game actions.

Detroit: Become Human

Platform: PlayStation 4

Release: May 25th

The developers behind Heavy Rain (2010) and Beyond: Two Souls (2013), Quantic Dream are releasing their highly anticipated ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ game Detroit: Become Human later this month. The PlayStation 4 exclusive will be based in a future Detroit where androids are a common part of everyday life and are so advanced that they are starting to become sentient. A demo that was released last month gave players a hand-on gameplay experience. Being able to play through an early level in the game players were treated to a great insight into the gameplay showing off exactly what players can expect from the full version.

Dark Souls: Remastered

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

Release:  May 25th (Nintendo Switch TBA)

The notoriously unforgiving Dark Souls (2011) is set for a remaster. You can now re-live this critically acclaimed, genre defining game from FromSoftware, this time in stunning 4K HD detail running at 60fps. Dark Souls: Remastered has been given a boost to its multiplayer mode with the number of online players being increased from 4 to 6. The remaster will include the original base game as well as the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.
