The highly anticipated sequel to The Last of Us was today officially unveiled.
The Last of Us Part II was officially unveiled with a four minute teaser during today’s PlayStation Experience to a rapturous response from the live crowd.
The teaser, shown above, shows an much older Ellie sitting on the edge of a bed singing a song before her companion Joel enters the room.
Ellie then states her intentions to “kill every last one of them”.
A sequel to Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us has long been anticipated.
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, writer and Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann wrote, “I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure.
“Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie.
Previously Druckmann said discussions on a sequel had taken place and that a sequel to the apocalyptic thriller had a 50/50 chance of happening.
“After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey,” he continued.
“It’s still early days for the project—the game’s release is a ways off—but we couldn’t wait any longer to give you a glimpse of what’s to come. We’re going to let the trailer speak for itself, but expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months.”
The 2013 original garnered universal critical acclaim and went on to take home numerous Game of the Year awards including several BAFTAs.
A film adaptation was announced but has since been stuck in development hell.
