Tomb Raider to surpass 6 million units sold by end of month

Square Enix have revealed that Tomb Raider is to sell its 6 millionth copy by the end of this month, marking its 1 year anniversary.

The reboot of Tomb Raider is to surpass 6 million units sold by the end of this month, according to Square Enix.

Head of Studios for Square Enix, Darrell Gallagher, revealed that the critically acclaimed Tomb Raider will sell its 6 millionth copy just ahead of its 1 year anniversary of releasing.

“By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot,” he wrote on Tomb Raider’s official blog. “And, having achieved profitability back in 2013 Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance.

“At launch we set franchise records for the fastest selling day one and month one in Tomb Raider history. With the positive word of mouth and continued commercial momentum it’s great to see Tomb Raider on course to become the best-selling game in the history of the franchise.

“This would be a crowning achievement for the teams around the world, and one that we have our sights firmly set on.”

Launching back in March 2013, the game went on to receive critical acclaim worldwide for its incredibly detailed environments, its emotional & immersive story and the performance of Camilla Luddington, who plays Lara Croft.

Winning over 40 end of year awards, Tomb Raider was also nominated for numerous Game of the Year awards. A whopping 3.4 million copies were sold during its first month, making it the biggest opening for a game at that time, and sold over 4 million copies by August 2013.

Despite selling 3.4 million copies during its first month and over 4 million copies by August 2013, publisher Square Enix had previously labeled the game a financial failure, saying that the game failed to meet the studio’s expectations.

Crystal Dynamics, developers, defended the game’s sales saying that the game achieved the biggest week one sales in the franchise’s history and, at the time of release, was the biggest opening in 2013.

It was previously revealed by the game’s executive producer that it took up to 9 months for Tomb Raider to make a profit.

A Definitive Edition for Tomb Raider was released in January.
