Take-Two CEO: Competitors Need to Focus on Content, Not Money

Take-Two Interactive, publishers of Grand Theft Auto, CEO warns competitors of focusing on money rather than in-game content

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he CEO of Take-Two Interactive has warned competiting companies to focus more on the content they are producing rather than the money they could be making.

Strauss Zelnick was talking at the Credit Suisse 2013 Annual Technology Conference on Tuesday when he warned competitors and insisted that if the content they produce is interesting to their fan base, then they will buy it from them.

Take-Two Interactive are the publishers of the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto franchise. The company launched the most recent title in the series, GTA V, on September 17th. It quickly became the biggest entertainment release in history, earning worldwide critical acclaim for it’s immersive world and engaging story. It broke 7 Guinness World Records, beat PS3 exclusive Last of Us on the PlayStation Network, outsold it’s predecessor GTA IV and broke $1 billion in sales just three days following its launch.

It was also awarded as Game of the Year at the recent Golden Joystick Awards and recently awarded with the Platinum Prize at the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia PlayStation Awards.

At the convention, Zelnick said, via Gamespot: “I have always been a believer in every entertainment business I’ve been in, that if you start by making consumers really, really happy, there’s always an option to make money on that basis. Many of our competitors really do think first about monetization and second about what they supply; we think first about what we’re supplying and second about monetization.

“We’ve announced that we’ve sold-in over 29 million units of the title. I feel like we’ve gotten well paid for our efforts.”

Zelnick further commented on Grand Theft Auto’s brand new online concept, GTA Online. He said: “Our focus with GTA Online is to delight consumers. The goods that we’re selling in the game are intended to enhance the experience first and foremost; we are charging money for them, but the way we do business at Take-Two is first and foremost driven by this desire to delight consumers.

“That’s why we have the highest Metacritic rating in the business for the past five years. And not just because we’re altruistic and we love doing it. By the way, we really do love doing it; we’re passionate about it.”

GTA V is currently available on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
