The first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is now online and it was worth the wait. It features plenty of action with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and also showcases three new super villains played by Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti and Dane Dehaan.

In this sequel film directed by the aptly named Marc Webb, Peter Parker is trying to come to terms with what it means to be a superhero. He laments how every time he defeats a bad guy, a new and even stronger one appears out of nowhere and he is forced to fight again. He knows that sooner or later he may face a foe stronger than him and is afraid he may not be able to defeat such an adversary. This fear of escalation was also explored in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films and it creates a serious problem for costumed heroes such as Spider-Man, Batman etc.

Such fears are justified as three new bad guys appear in the movie: Electro played by Jamie Foxx who has the power to manipulate electricity, Rhino played by Paul Giamatti who pilots a huge armored suit which gives him super strength and Green Goblin aka Harry Osborne who uses high-tech gadgets as weapons. Dane DeHaan plays Osborne who is the heir to a huge corporation called OsCorp which appears to be doing some research into new technologies which could endanger the world.  Peter Parker learns of this and decides to take on OsCorp and foil their plans.

The film also has a great supporting cast including: Emma Stone, Campbell Scott, Sally Field, Martin Sheen and Chris Cooper.

Fans won’t be disappointed with the trailer as it gives viewers a nice preview of things to come. Spider-Man is shown taking on various bad guys and there are also plenty of scenes showing Peter Parker spending time with his girlfriend and family. The super villains don’t get that much screen-time but that is a good thing, it is always nice when a trailer is restrained and avoids showing too much footage. Rhino and Electro are well known villains in the comic books but they haven’t appeared in a film until now. The Amazing Spider-Man films have a knack for thrusting lesser known Spider-Man super villains into the spotlight which is admirable.

Eager viewers can catch the film when it is released on April 18th, 2014, check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
