It’s time to gallop through the galaxies again, because Flash Gordon is making a comeback! The heroic sci-fi adventurer will hit the big screen once more in a remake of the 1980 original.

The story of a gifted footballer sent on a mission through time and space to take on the evil Ming the Merciless, has a cult following that will no doubt be thrilled at the prospect.

Although at the time the box-office returns were a tad meagre, the movie, which starred Sam Jones in the title role, has retained a huge fanbase. This, on top of the decades of comic books, seems to have pressed all the right buttons for 20th Century Fox. So far they have hired Star Trek 3 scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to pen the script, along with producer John Davis overseeing the whole thing.

Many found it strange as to how Jones all but vanished from the landscape after making the film. In the style of a true ‘where are they now’ story, Flash Gordon, for which he beat off the likes of Kurt Russell and Arnold Schwarzenegger for the lead, was only his second movie, and the future looked bright. However, the planned trilogy never materialised due to a spat between Jones and the would-be production team. The turkey trail then beckoned from then on, until a surprise appearance in 2012’s Ted.

But enough of all that, let us get to the nitty-gritty. Is there a band on this planet worthy of tackling a cover of the famous theme song, written and performed by Queen? After all, it is probably more memorable than the picture itself, but probably also something that only Freddie Mercury and co could pull off. Therefore, a completely new composition could be the order of the day.

So for now, dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun…
