Fear not, earthlings, because 20th Century Fox want to enlist the help of Matthew Vaughn to direct their adaptation of comic fantasy Flash Gordon. The news comes nearly 35 years after Sam Jones starred as the titular hero, Flash’s last big screen outing.
The iconic space adventurer’s mission will be, as ever, to journey to the planet Mongo in order to save earth from the evil Ming the Merciless, aided by his female companion Dale Arden and scientist Hans Zarkov.
Although he made his name with diamond geezer gangster fare such as Lock Stock, Snatch and Layer Cake, Vaughn has also proved himself a dab hand in the comic book manor, with Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and Kingsman: The Secret Service all receiving rave reviews. It’s little wonder, then, that Fox are keen to sign him up for the hotseat.
Clearly, the studio is taking this project, which began last year, very seriously. If Vaughn were to land the gig, he would be working from a script by Star Trek 3 scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, whilst working with noted producers John Davis (Predator) and George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum). Quite right, too, because the aforementioned 1980 version has become dear to the hearts of geeks and non-geeks alike, so any imitation needs to be bang on the money to get Ming quaking in his boots.
It’s unknown if Vaughn is a genuine fan of the character, but whether he’s taken with the idea or not could be of little consequence. At present, he’s on production duties for Eddie the Eagle and in talks for a sequel to Kingsman, both of which are in the Fox stable, who are obviously under the impression that Vaughn has suddenly become Superman now that he has a few comic book credits under his belt!
The last time Flash was on our screens was in 2007/08 in a far from memorable series for the Sci-Fi Channel, so a revival is long overdue.
