Ewan McGregor will star in American Pastoral

Ewan McGregor will play the lead role in the long-suffering adaptation of Philip Roth's Pulitzer prize-winning novel American Pastoral

Ewan McGregor will star in Philip Noyce’s adaptation of Philip Roth’s Pulitzer prize-winning 1997 novel American Pastoral.

He will play the part of Seymour ‘Swede’ Levov, a successful businessman whose seemingly perfect all-American life begins to fall apart after his teenage daughter is accused of engineering a deadly terrorist attack as a form of protest during the Vietnam War.

The rights to American Pastoral were bought by Paramount quite some time ago, and then by Lakeshore Entertainment in 2003, but the film got stuck in development hell causing original stars Paul BettanyJennifer Connelly and Evan Rachel Wood all to drop out of the project.

“Phillip Noyce is an exceptionally talented film-maker and we’re excited to see him bring Philip Roth’s great American classic to the big screen,” said Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg. “We’re thrilled to be working with Ewan McGregor and have long believed he is the perfect actor to take on the powerful and complex character of the Swede.”

The book has been adapted for the screen by John Romano (The Lincoln Lawyer).

If everybody sticks around for long enough to make a go of it this time, production on American Pastoral is slated to begin in March 2015.
