The nominations for the 2012 Golden Raspberry Awards have been announced. Every year on April Fools’ Day the Razzies honour the worst of the worst in the world of film, presenting ‘winners’ with a golden raspberry in recognition of their truly abysmal contributions to cinema.
Setting a record with a total of eleven nominations, it looks as though the biggest loser in 2012 will be Adam Sandler. His unusually high number of contemptuous nods can be attributed to his unusually high number of awful films in 2011, namely Jack and Jill, Just Go With It and Bucky Larson: A Star is Born. His nominations include Worst Picture (Jack and Jill), Worst Actor (Jack and Jill, Just Go With It), Worst Actress (Jack and Jill), Worst Screen Ensemble (Jack and Jill), and two nominations in the Worst Screen Couple category, pairing him with either Jennifer Aniston or Brooklyn Decker in Just Go With It, or a choice of Katie Holmes, Al Pacino, or himself in Jack and Jill.
Worst Actress is notable this year for including nominations for two men (alongside Adam Sandler, Martin Lawrence is also nominated for his cross-dressing role in Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son). Also up for Worst Actress is politician Sarah Palin (as herself) in documentary Sarah Palin: The Undefeated. It will come as no surprise to most that vampire tween romance Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 has been nominated in almost every category, clocking up a total of eight nods.
As for the least coveted category, Worst Film, it’s a bar room brawl between Bucky Larson and Jack and Jill (two of Adam Sandler’s rotten eggs), shameless holiday cash-in New Year’s Eve, Michael Bay’s latest epically ridiculous flop Transformers: Dark of the Moon and, of course, the most recent addition to the agonisingly immortal Twilight Saga.
