Taking the spot usually reserved for Sony, Square Enix made sure to deliver in their press conference this year. With plenty of footage of the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake, four other games in the series were also announced. The previously teased Outriders got some screen time, as well as the long-awaited Marvel Avengers.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Square Enix opened their E3 press conference by showing off the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake through a few different trailers and some gameplay footage featuring Cloud and Barret. The gameplay footage showed off the Active Time Battle combat system which will allow players to freeze time and issue advanced commands such as casting spells and using battle items. It was previously announced that the Final Fantasy VII Remake would be split into different parts but there was no mention of this during the briefing. What was announced however, is that FFVII Remake will be a big game and will split across two Blu-ray discs.
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
The Final Fantasy series had a huge presence in Square Enix’s conference and in addition to Fantasy VII Remake, Square Enix also announced several other titles in the series. One of these being a remaster of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Featuring updated visuals, new voice acting, and brand-new content, the game will release later on in the year for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, all with the option of playing online and local multiplayer.
War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a spin-off of the tactical RPG mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius has been announced for release in the west sometime this year. There isn’t much information surrounding it yet, but it will be set in the same place as Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius and depicts a war between five rival nations.
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered
If all the other Final Fantasy news wasn’t enough for you, then Square Enix have got you covered with the announcement that Final Fantasy VIII is getting a remaster of its own. Coming to every current-generation platform this year, it isn’t getting the super HD treatment that FFVII is getting, but it’s still some very exciting news for long time fans and those who are just getting into the series thanks to these remasters.
The Last Remnant Remastered
The Last Remnant is an RPG that was initially released on Xbox 360 back in 2008 with a PlayStation 4 remaster last year. On top of all the other RPG news coming out of Square Enix at this year’s E3, the remastered version of the The Last Remnant has been announced for Nintendo Switch, and is available right now for download.
Dragon Quest Builders 2
A sequel to Dragon Quest Builders was announced and a new trailer was revealed. The Minecraft (2011) style game has you exploring the universe of Dragon Quest, building your way to a better world. When you’re not exploring ruins, mines, and castles, you will need to build a home for your builders and start growing food in order to survive. However, it’s not all exploring and building as you will have to fight to protect yourself from the dangerous creatures that roam the land.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition S
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition S, an expanded version of Dragon Quest XI has been announced for release this year on Nintendo Switch. The title will feature music from a full orchestra, as well as a brand-new chapter.
Kingdom Hearts Re-Mind
The first DLC for Kingdom Hearts III (2019) has been announced for release later this year, called Re-Mind. Knowing that the game is on its way is unfortunately all that there is to know, so fans will have to wait for another announcement nearer the time of release.
Outriders
People Can Fly, one of the developers behind Gears of War (2007) and Bulletstorm (2011), have announced the previously teased Outriders, coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in the summer of 2020, with more details coming later this year. The developers didn’t give much away from the short teaser trailer that was shown, but it was shown that Outriders will be a co-op action shooter set in a sci-fi universe. While you can play solo, the game also features drop-in, drop-out co-op play, which will allow up to three players to take part in various missions and events.
Oninaki
Having been previously announced earlier in the year, Oninaki has been given a release date of 22nd August 2019. The latest game from Square Enix Studio, Tokyo RPG Factory, will have players assuming the role of protagonist Kagachi as he explores the realms of life and death to save lost souls and make sense of the mystery surrounding the realms.
Marvel Avengers
To close their 2019 E3 press conference, Square Enix revealed the long-awaited Marvel Avengers. The trailer did show some gameplay but it’s still very unclear what type of game it will be. It will, however, have a co-op mode where you’ll be able to play online with groups of up to four people. It was also announced that Marvel Avengers will not feature any microtransactions, with new characters being added for free. The game will feature an all-star cast including Nolan North (Iron Man), Troy Baker (Bruce Banner), Jeff Schine (Captain America), Travis Willingham (Thor), and Laura Bailey (Black Widow). The game is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia, with the PS4 version getting “unique benefits” on 15th May 2020.
