Managing in the premier league is becoming an increasingly difficult task. Being the manager of a top club brings with it great expectation, failure to succeed will inevitably lead to dismissal. We are now halfway through the season, and already five managers have lost their jobs. Which other premier league managers could suffer the same fate?
Manchester City currently sit 3rd in the table, just three points off of the top. Manuel Pellegrini’s future at the club is in doubt. The news that Pep Guardiola will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season has put the top clubs in England on red alert. City will do all that they can to sign Guardiola as their manager for next season. They see him as the perfect man to fulfill the club’s potential, which includes dominating domestically, and winning the champions league for the first time in the club’s history. If Pellegrini is to lose his job, it would be harsh on the man who secured City the premier league title in his first season. The people in power at City have a long term plan, and are looking to progress every season. The addition of Guardiola would increase the chances of this happening.
Louis Van Gaal’s position at Manchester United is becoming more precarious by the day. Recent lacklustre performances have seen United slip down the table, they currently sit in 6th position. A lack of goals in the team with little evidence of any attacking flair, has led many supporters of the club to believe that Van Gaal’s time as manager has come to an end. Add to that the fact that Jose Mourinho recently lost his job as manager of Chelsea. Could the special one be the man to help United return to former glory? If Mourinho does become the next manager at Old Trafford, it will be interesting to see how he goes about his business. Undoubtedly he is still a great manager, one of the best in the world. He would ensure that Man United challenge for honours once again.
Chelsea recently appointed Guus Hiddink as manager, until the end of the season. They will have a different man leading the team come the start of the next campaign. But who will it be? The perfect replacement has to be Diego Simeone, the current manager of Atletico Madrid. His achievements as Atletico manger in the last few seasons have been incredible. I rate Simeone as the best manager in the world at this moment. If Chelsea could secure his signature for next season, they will once again be challenging for the premier league title. If Simeone decides to stay at Atletico, Chelsea should have no trouble attracting another world class manager to lead their team. The next appointment will be a big one after Mourinho, as they can’t afford not to be challenging for the title again next season.
At the start of the season, I would’ve said that Newcastle United are the most unpredictable team in the Premier League. Under Steve Mcclaren, nothing has changed. At the halfway point of the season they sit in 18th position, once again relegation is a real possibility. With the money they spent in the transfer window, it wasn’t meant to be this way again. Is Mcclarens job under threat, or does the ex England manager just need more time to get the best out of his players? If Newcastle continue to perform inconsistently, Mcclaren may find himself out of a job. The hierarchy at Newcastle will be determined to ensure that the club regains its premier league status. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re already looking for possible candidates to replace Mcclaren, when the time comes.
The start of next season will see many managerial changes. Pep Guardiola could end up at Manchester City, Manchester United, or maybe even Chelsea. Jose Mourinho will be keen to stay in the premier league, with Man United his most likely destination. Chelsea will appoint a new full time manager. while other clubs will also look to improve their fortunes, by changing the man at the top.
