What do Disney and bank holiday weekends have in common? The answer is that they’re both set to repeat Mary Poppins sometime in the future. We are, of course, familiar with the 1964 classic brightening our screens, but this is perhaps the most daunting of all the remakes that Disney has announced so far.
Not only has Mary Poppins touched the hearts of generations, but back in the day it bagged five Oscars and grossed a total of $100m, making more than just a mint for author PL Travers, who was against the making of the film to begin with and wasn’t exactly its biggest fan once she’d seen the finished article.
This was thought to be because the book depicted Poppins in a much darker light than the sugary character played by Julie Andrews. But, as with their nearly finished re-telling of The Jungle Book, the second incarnation will be much closer to the original story.
There has already been a whole host of stars linked to what must surely be one of the roles of the century, with Anne Hathaway and Kate Winslet both being tipped. What’s certain is that Rob Marshall, who won an Academy award for Chicago, will be directing, with David Magee of Finding Neverland fame writing the screenplay. However, because of plans for a less light-hearted affair it’s unlikely that songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be composing a soundtrack with tunes like Chim Chim Cher-ee and the other, longer one.
The one thing that the two versions will have in common is the live-action musical set-up, so if the lucky girl who is chosen to play Mary didn’t have a big enough job on her hands, she’s also going to need a fair set of lungs.
In fact you could say that she’ll have to be practically perfect in every way.
