Had fans stopped asking about the long awaited The Last Guardian then Sony “probably” would’ve cancelled it, a top Sony executive has revealed.
Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios, recently revealed in the latest issue of Edge magazine (via Videogamer.com) that the highly anticipated fantasy adventure title “probably” would have been cancelled if fans had stopped asking the studio for an update about the game.
“If everyone stopped asking about it, probably we would have [cancelled the game],” said Yoshida, who later said that the port from PS3 to PS4 proved “really, really tough”.
He added: “Tech issues aside, the game was still early in development, so we had to have a really strong desire to continue the project and rebuild on PS4. And of course we believed in the vision of Ueda-san, and Ueda-san and the core teams really wanted to see this realised, and so did I.
“Having so many people asking us about the game was great encouragement for us to continue the development.”
The Last Guardian follows a young boy in a strange and mystical land as he discovers a mysterious creature with which he forms a deep, unbreakable bond. The unlikely pair must rely on each other to journey through towering, treacherous ruins filled with unknown dangers.
Originally announced back in 2009, the game has been stuck in development at Team ICO for years.
Over the past year Sony have had to battle off numerous reports that the game had been cancelled, assuring fans that the title was still in development and if such a decision was made to cancel the title, they would say so.
Previously Yoshida had to clarify that if the game did get cancelled “we’ll say so”.
A couple of weeks ago however, during E3, Sony announced the release window for the game as 2016.
