Spielberg to continue Indiana Jones streak?

Steven Spielberg is known throughout the world as one of the most legendary and influential characters in the movie industry and probably one of the most renowned directors in all of film history. He brought us amazing cinematic pieces like Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, E.T, the list goes on. Anything Spielberg sets his hand to is on the right track for success, so could the new Indiana Jones film revive the franchise and knock all the previous ones out of the water? I think there is a good chance, especially with Chris Pratt taking the reins as the new star.

Spielberg had directed all four of the previous Indiana Jones movies, the latest of which, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), was poorly received by audiences. However, was it going to send the series down in a fiery pit of ashes? No! The Indiana Jones franchise had racked up over $2bn at the global box office, putting this set of films in the running for the top 20 highest-grossing films of all time. It would be silly to let one badly received film run throw all that away, right? Right.

Most people might think that because of Spielberg’s’ history with the franchise and his obvious interest in not only the story but the character itself, it would be obvious that he would just continue with the future films, but it wasn’t a sure thing. Recently though, Spielberg made it apparent that he is interested to keep on going with it, especially with Pratt filling in Harrison Ford‘s vacated shoes. He caught the eye of Spielberg and was hand-picked by him to star in Colin Trevorrow‘s new Jurassic Park movie, which is set for release on June 12. It’s possible that some fans may feel hurt that their beloved Harrison will not feature in the newest movie, but Pratt shows real promise with his growing repertoire of action-packed movies and charming likeability. I am sure he is up for the challenge and may bring a refreshing feel to the movie, possibly even winning over some new fans.

However, all is not yet set in stone for the future of Indiana Jones. Although the movie is still in the very early stages of development, Spielberg is on board only if the screenplay is written to his satisfaction. With no further information on the movie, we are left at a standstill of anxiously waiting to see what happens – what adventures will our new Jones (whoever he turns out to be) have in store for us? What obstacles will he face? We will just have to sit and wait and have faith that an amazing screenplay will be written, leaving Spielberg with no choice but to take up the next adventure of the series.
