News has begun circulating around the internet that the film that’s set to be this year’s Valentine’s sensation, Fifty Shades of Grey, has already had two sequels green-lighted before its release. These will no doubt be based upon the original novel’s sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. The film’s director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, confirmed this news yesterday prior to an advanced screening of Fifty Shades of Grey at New York’s Seigfeld Theatre.
The film, based on the first of E.L. James‘ 100 million copy-selling novels, themselves based on Twilight fan fiction, is already Fandango’s fastest-selling advance ticket R-film ever.
Being that most of the cast probably hate each other at this point, it is unknown if actors Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will return. A lifetime of built-up cynicism would lead me to suggest that the paycheque and massive international exposure may be enough to bring them back. Not so long ago, it was also thought that there would only be the one film, mainly due to the fact that with so much XXX-rated content in the books themselves, any sequels would struggle to keep hold of the R-rated status, as there simply wouldn’t be enough suitable material to go around!
Meanwhile, not only has the film been banned in Malaysia, but protestors have already begun urging people to boycott the film in the West under the hashtags #50DollarsNot50Shades and #50ShadesIsAbuse, due to what they perceive to be a promotion of violence against women and a general disrespect to the BDSM community and its practices, which emphasise the importance of obtaining informed consent. #50DollarsNot50Shades in particular, seeks to convince people to donate the $50 (£33) that they would have used to go see Fifty Shades of Grey and instead donate it to a local domestic violence shelter.
Whatever your stance on Fifty Shades of Grey, its release this Valentine’s Day will no doubt be an event worth talking about.
